Camino de Santiago: People
Approximately 175,000 people walk all or a portion of the Camino Frances each year. They come from all backgrounds and for all reasons. While the pilgrimage began as a Catholic tradition---and many pilgrims still walk for Cristian purposes---the modern pilgrim walks for a variety of reasons: spirituality, personal discovery, health, and cultural tourism, to name a few. Pop culture has had a role in popularizing the Camino and today you can see the influence of recent films (in English, German, and Korean in particular) on attendance from certain nations. All this diversity is united by the common greeting share among passing pilgrims: "Buen camino!"
